Pearl Harbor Day memorial service set

Event Date:

I am a retired Navy veteran (21 years active duty) and a proud member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 275, Placerville, an organization comprised of active duty, retired and all veterans regardless of time served, who have been honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. I was not in the Navy on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941; I was only 12 years old at the time, but I do remember the shock and the anger I felt on that fateful day in American history.

I did enlist on my 17th birthday.

I plan on attending the memorial services of the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, at 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the east room of the Veterans Memorial Building, 130 Placerville Drive. I strongly urge all veterans, their families and the public to join with me in remembrance of this day of infamy 70 years ago.

Every year we have fewer and fewer survivors of Pearl Harbor able to attend this memorial service because of age and health problems. This possibly could be the last opportunity for us to show the honor and respect that these individuals deserve. It is easy to remember some of the actions that have happened in the last few years, but we often forget actions that have happened far in the past.

This service is dedicated to the memory of the 2,335 members of the military forces who were killed in action on that date and is also an opportunity for us to honor a few of the remaining Pearl Harbor survivors who may be attending this ceremony.
